Scout Tabs Harrison Barnes As No. 1 Overall Pick In 2012

Jun 28, 2011 1:22 PM

After an inconsistent freshman season, Harrison Barnes decided to remain at North Carolina for the 11-12 season.

Barnes was impressive on Monday while battling Kevin Durant at the Elite Skills Camp in Chicago.

"Top pick in the next draft -- by far," said one scout of Barnes.

Krzyzewski Denies Report Wolves Contacted Him

Jun 26, 2011 10:49 PM

Mike Krzyzewski has rejected NBA overtures from the Boston Celtics and the Los Angeles Lakers since he became Duke's men's basketball coach in 1980.

On Saturday night, he said the Minnesota Timberwolves won't be luring him away either.

While a published report said the Timberwolves were interested in hiring Krzyzewski as they were moving to fire coach Kurt Rambis last week, the coach said through a school spokesman that it was a non-starter.

Duke spokesman Matt Plizga said he spoke with Krzyzewski Saturday night and the coach said "no one had contacted him and he hadn't contacted anyone" about the Minnesota job.

Report: Wolves Approached Coach K About Top Job

Jun 26, 2011 1:52 PM

Timberwolves GM David Kahn made a run at Mike Krzyzewski.

Talk about a waste of time. Coach K once turned down a chance to go to the Lakers and coach Kobe Bryant in his prime. Did Kahn really think that he could get Krzyzewski to leave his Duke kingdom? He did.

"He tried to get him," said one Kahn confidante.

UNC's Barnes Working To Improve Ballhanding At Elite PG Camp

Jun 14, 2011 3:38 PM

Harrison Barnes struggled out of the gates a year ago as a freshman before turning it around in the middle of the season (not coincidentally when Kendall Marshall was inserted into the starting lineup).

One of the areas in which Barnes struggled was putting it on the floor and beating defenders off the dribble.

“I want to work on my ballhandling and what better way than to work with one of the best point guards in the world,” Barnes said from the CP3 Camp. “Ballhandling a big emphasis for me this offseason.”

Barnes, who will also attend the Kevin Durant Skills Camp, also said he has focused on developing a more adept post game – as well as the overall consistency of his shooting.

Rivers To Wear Number 0 At Duke, Dubs Himself 'Subzero'

Jun 8, 2011 10:38 AM

Incoming Duke freshman Austin Rivers has yet to play a minute in college basketball, but the No. 1 overall recruit already has a nickname ready to go when he takes the court for the Blue Devils.

Yesterday, Rivers tweeted that he has picked the number he will wear on his jersey next season at Duke and the nickname that will accompany it:

Wearing number 0 next year! My nick name is going to be subzero! Cause of number and because my moves freeze people, got ice in my veins!!

Harrison Barnes To Attend Chris Paul Elite PG Camp

Jun 3, 2011 4:16 PM

North Carolina sophomore Harrison Barnes is not a point guard. He does not play one on TV. But he will be one at the CP3 Elite Guard Camp that begins June 10 in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Barnes is one of 17 college players invited to the camp, sponsored by Nike, that bears the insignia of NBA all-star Chris Paul and is designed to help high school and college players develop their point guard skills.

Most of the collegians who'll attend play the point guard position regularly, including Sporting News All-American Jordan Taylor of Wisconsin, developing Louisville junior Peyton Siva and Barnes' teammate -- the Tar Heels' real playmaker -- Kendall Marshall.

But like former Duke star forward Kyle Singler, who attended the camp last season, Barnes reached out to Nike to ask if he could be considered for the CP3 camp to help him improve his ballhandling and passing skills.

Singleton Likens Himself To Pippen

Jun 1, 2011 10:33 AM

Florida State forward Chris Singleton defended so well against one of the draft class' best scorers, Jordan Hamilton of Texas, in the Golden State Warriors’ workout that he was ready to seek out established competition. Namely, Al Thornton - a top-notch scorer who is also from Florida State.

"I'm from Atlanta, so I'm not scared of anybody. I'm going to bring that toughness to whatever team drafts me," he said. "I feel like I'm the modern-day Scottie Pippen. I feel like I can do it all: pass, shoot, dribble and play defense."

Singleton, a lanky and nimble prospect, is considered by many scouts to be the best defender in this year's draft. The back-to-back ACC Defensive Player of the Year is one of only five players to finish among the top five in the conference in both steals and blocks in a single season.
